Emmanuel Lipmann

Emmanuel Isaac Lipmann was born in Neuf Brisach, in 1844. His father, who was born from an Alsacian watchmaking family, sold watch making supplies.

Emmanuel Isaac Lipmann was born in Neuf Brisach, in 1844. His father, who was born from an Alsacian watchmaking family, sold watch making supplies. Emmanuel creates a workshop in 1867. The trade quickly grows thanks to the working power of its creator, his visionary way of aprenhending esthetic and his willfull personality. In october 1868, he gets married with Caroline Geismar whom he'll have three whildren with : Ernest, the technician, and Camille who takes charge of a new factory, and participate ina n efficient way to the expension of the family business. Jenny who was less involved takes care of the administrative side. Emmanuel Lipmann dies in 1913.

The begining of the story

Emmanuel Lipmann creates, at 23 years old a clock workshop in Besançon. The "trading post Lipmann" hires 15 employees and is situated at the number 14 of the Grand Rue.

Phosphorescent dials
invented by Pierre et Marie Curie

Ernest Lipmann asks Pierre and Marie Curie to find a material to allow the personn wearing it to read the time in the dark. Since they have discovered the radium properties in 1898, they manage to invent the first phosphorescent dials for Lip.

Frédéric Samuel Lipmann is Emmanuel's grand son and is the son of Ernest, born the 2nd of November 1905.

Fred Lip

Frédéric Samuel Lipmann is Emmanuel's grand son and is the son of Ernest, born the 2nd of November 1905. After a difficult scholarship in Paris, he fails at the orol of his A level in 1922. His takes him back to the family cocoon and puts him at the watchmaking school in Besançon. Once his military obligations fullfilled, he goes travelling to United States in 1928 to study and visits the watchmaking manufacture, the Harley Davidson and Indian's assembling factory. That travel as well as his passion for motor sports would influence and inspire his methods later. In august 1931, he joins the family business. Some consider him as a genius and some other as a mad personn, "the Fred", like he was called, certainly shakes the traditions. Under his management, Lip inovates and become the first watchmaker in France. 1954 will be a peak year for the company with 1500 employees, 300 000 montres a year and in 1960, the Palente factory. But Fred Lip doesn't manage to adapt himself to the watchmakingmarket in fast evolution with the freshly quartz and in 1971, leaves his position. He passes away, the 9th of novembre 1996.

Since 1935, Lip makes a little serie of "Type 10", an on board watch for the aeronautic, which equiped the "croix du Sud"Jean Mermoz's plane.

Constant education

Prioneer, Lip set up a constant education program. During the two years of that quality education program the young employees receive a normal wage.

in the world is a Lip

Fred Lip initiates a research program in 1946, that reaches its goals with the electric watch in the world, baptised "Electronic". It was présented the 19th of march 1952 and sold in december 1958.

The Palente site is inaugurated: Its modernest factory in europe with a transport network for the employees, a restaurant and a company nursery.

The legendary
Nautic-Ski

For the Centennial anniversary of the company, Lip sells the "Nautic-Ski" at the "printemps" in Paris in 1967.

For the Centennial anniversary of the company, Lip sells the "Nautic-Ski" at the "printemps" in Paris in 1967. It's the first watch to be water resistant as deep as 200 meters under water (20 atmospheres) feated with an inner rotating bezel positionned under the glass to avoid any movement that could be at the origin of a nautic accident.

In january, Claude Neuschwander takes over with the management of the compapny without forgetting the l'esprit Lip : technicity, reliability and avant-garde. The 11th of march, after 329 days of conflict "Lip is alive".
